Syria: Missile strikes kill at least 13 in Afrin June 12

Event

Two separate missile strikes have killed at least 13 people and injured more than 27 others in Afrin, Aleppo Governorate, June 12. The first hit a residential area while the second struck Al Shifa Hospital. Turkey has blamed the Syrian People's Protection Units (YPG) for the attacks.

Heightened security is likely in the impacted areas as authorities investigate and respond to the incident. Localized ground transport and business disruptions are probable due to increased security measures. Additional attacks cannot be ruled out.

Afrin is located approximately 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Aleppo city.

Context

Ankara views the YPG as a militant group linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) based in Turkey. Several bombings have occurred in areas along the Turkish-Syrian border since Turkey launched a military offensive into northeastern Syria in October 2019. The Islamic State (IS) has also claimed responsibility for some attacks. Turkey's military presence in northern Syria will likely lead to further attacks in the future.
