The cancellation follows earlier violent counterprotests and calls from government officials to suspend the event due to the high risk of further violence. At least 20 journalists were reported injured following anti-LGBTQ protests near Shota Rustaveli Avenue and 9 April Park the afternoon of July 5. Further counterdemonstrations by anti-LGBTQ groups remain likely the evening of July 5 in the wake of the cancellation.
