Multiple sources reported that a gunfight occurred between Afghan security forces and unknown attackers at the north gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport (KBL) at around 04:13 Aug. 23. German and US Army personnel were reportedly also involved in the shootout, which killed one Afghan security personnel and wounded three others. There have been no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack.

Heightened security and severe transport disruptions are ongoing around KBL as evacuation operations continue. Further isolated shootouts are likely as security forces attempt to secure KBL.
