Burundi: Authorities maintaining COVID-19-related restrictions as of Sept. 28 /update 16
Authorities maintain COVID-19-related measures in Burundi as of Sept. 28; land borders with DRC and Tanzania open.
Event
Authorities are maintaining COVID-19-related domestic and travel restrictions as of Sept. 28 to limit the spread of COVID-19. All incoming and departing air passengers must possess a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to travel. Travelers must also undergo testing upon arrival at their own cost and self-isolate for 24 hours while waiting for the result. Individuals who test positive must quarantine at a government-designated hotel for up to 14 days. The land border with Rwanda remains closed to passenger traffic, while the land borders with DRC and Tanzania are open to passenger traffic under strict health protocols; enhanced screening measures are in place at all ports of entry. All travelers to and from Burundi must book their tests through the Ministry of Health website.
Domestically, officials encourage social distancing and the use of facemasks.
Authorities could impose, extend, or otherwise amend any COVID-19-related restrictions with little or no notice.
Advice
Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all travel arrangements before arrival. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments. Plan for queues and delays at available shopping centers.
