A protest is ongoing in central Baku's Fountains Square on the afternoon of Dec. 1. Protesters earlier clashed with police in the area; around 30 activists have been arrested. Participants are gathering in solidarity with Saleh Rustamli, who they say is a political prisoner that has been on hunger strike for several weeks.
Police have deployed heavily to the area and closed several roads adjoining the square. Traffic and public transport disruptions are likely in the coming hours. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face a significant physical threat.
