The Red Taraba rebel group has claimed responsibility for an attack targeting Burundian security personnel in the vicinity of Gatumba, Bujumbura Rural Province, near the shared border with DRC overnight Dec. 19-20. Rebels allegedly engaged security forces for an hour, killing five soldiers and seven police officers, and injuring several others. Authorities have yet to confirm the incident.
Officials will certainly maintain a heavy security presence in the vicinity of Gatumba and the nearby border areas over the coming days. Movement restrictions are likely. Red Tabara militants may also launch further attacks in the near term.
Context
Red Tabara is opposed to the central government. It became active in 2015 and is based in the neighboring DRC's South Kivu Province. It is one of the most active Burundian rebel groups and carries out attacks on a regular basis. Red Tabara claimed responsibility for the attack targeting Melchior Ndadaye-Bujumbura International Airport (BJM) overnight Sept 18-19.

Exercise increased vigilance while operating in the vicinity of Gatumba and the border areas. Anticipate increased security presence and related measures. If possible, avoid crowded areas, including bars, pubs, public squares, bus stations, military installations, and other sensitive areas with a substantial security presence.
