Authorities in Botswana require COVID-19 vaccines for international travelers as of Feb. 19; domestic restrictions remain in place

Event

As of Feb. 19, the government requires all international arrivals to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the country. Travelers require two doses of a two dose vaccine, or one dose of a one dose vaccine. Those that are overdue for a booster will not be considered as fully vaccinated. It remains unclear how many months after the final dose is considered overdue. Unvaccinated travelers may enter the country with a negative PCR test result and will be vaccinated upon arrival at the airport.

Domestic Measures

  • Public gatherings can resume with strict health protocols in place.

  • Facemasks are mandatory in public.

International restrictions

  • International and domestic air travel has resumed. Land border crossings are open.

  • Persons entering Botswana must show proof of complete vaccination or a negative result from a PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival and submit to vaccination at the airport. Moreover, additional screening procedures and testing are in force at the nation's entry points.

  • Travelers entering the country must self-monitor and remain in contact with local health authorities for 14 days. Upon arrival, all travelers will be tested at no cost. Those that test positive or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will be placed in quarantine at their own expense.

  • Returning Botswanan citizens and legal residents who do not possess a negative COVID-19 test certificate will be tested at the border and face up to 14 days of quarantine at a government facility.

  • All travelers leaving the country must produce a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before their departure.

Authorities could reimpose, extend, further ease, or otherwise amend any restrictions with little-to-no notice depending on disease activity over the coming weeks.

Advice

Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all travel arrangements. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
