Warning

Event

Authorities are maintaining COVID-19-related domestic and travel restrictions unchanged as of March 8.

Domestic Measures
Officials encourage social distancing and the use of facemasks. In addition, festive gatherings, karaoke, and nightclubs remain closed. Officials require those traveling to and from Bujumbura to get tested. Authorities have implemented several control points to enforce the measure. It remains unclear whether the measure remains in force as of March 8.

International Travel Restrictions
All incoming and departing air passengers above 24-years old must possess a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before travel. Travelers must also undergo testing upon arrival at their own cost and self-isolate for 24 hours while waiting for the result. Individuals who test positive must quarantine at their own cost until they have recovered. All travelers must book their arrival and departure tests through the Ministry of Health website. The land border with Rwanda remains closed to passenger traffic, while the land borders with DRC and Tanzania are open to passenger traffic under strict health protocols; enhanced screening measures are in place at all ports of entry.

Authorities could impose, extend, or otherwise amend any COVID-19-related restrictions with little or no notice.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all travel arrangements before arrival. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments. Plan for queues and delays at available shopping centers.
