PNG: Increased volcanic activity recorded at Manam Volcano in Madang Province as of March 8
Increased volcanic activity recorded at Manam Volcano in Madang Province, PNG, as of March 8; authorities issue volcanic ash advisory.
Event
Authorities have observed increased levels of volcanic activity at Manam Volcano, located in Papua New Guinea's Madang Province, as of March 8. The volcano recently produced a volcanic ash plume that rose to an estimated altitude of 15,200 meters (50,000 feet). There have been no initial reports of casualties or damage. The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) has issued a red-level ash advisory (the highest level on a four-tier scale) for aviation. Previous eruptions at the volcano have resulted in short-notice disruptions to flights, especially at Madang Airport (MAG).
Despite the increased volcanic activity, authorities have not issued any mandatory evacuations for the surrounding area; however, evacuation orders remain possible, especially if volcanic activity escalates. Additional eruptions could cause low-level seismic activity, ash clouds, and landslides in the surrounding area. Manam Volcano could emit further gas and ash clouds in the coming days.
Health
Further volcanic activity may impact air quality in parts of Madang Province. Air quality could become a concern, particularly in areas near the crater following an explosive event. Individuals in the region - especially those with underlying pulmonary conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or lung cancers - may experience difficulty breathing and could suffer from lower tolerance to physical exertion.
Transport
Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of significant ashfall, and visibility could be reduced. Officials might close roads near the volcano depending on the presence of hazardous volcanic material. Fine particulate matter ejected from the volcano could pose a hazard to flights in the surrounding airspace; as of March 8, flights at MAG were operating normally. Authorities may temporarily close airport facilities if significant ashfall accumulations occur.
Advice
Confirm flights if a large eruption occurs. Plan for possible transport disruptions if operating near Manam Volcano over the coming days. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving; drive cautiously in areas affected by ash and consequently reduced visibility. Carry facemasks and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation if operating in the affected area.
