India: Authorities bolster security in Jahangirpuri area of Delhi through April 21 for demolishment of illegal structures

Enhanced security measures were earlier imposed in the locality following communal clashes April 16. Authorities are on alert against possible protests and violence during the demolition drive.

Additional security measures including arrests and temporary movement or internet controls may occur if residents hold protests or obstruct demolition works. Context

Violent clashes broke out April 16 after a Hindu religious procession faced firing and stone-pelting while passing a Muslim-dominated area in Jahangirpuri. Stone pelting and vandalism, including the burning of several vehicles, ensued. The clashes resulted in at least 10 injuries, including police officers. Security personnel also faced resistance and minor attacks during arrests in the area. Police have arrested over 26 people in the past days, and charged five individuals under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) which permits preventive detention.
