Iran, Afghanistan: Border crossing reopened as of April 25 following closure due to tensions between Iranian and Taliban forces /update 1

Northern Iranian-Afghan border crossing reopened as of April 25 after closure due to tensions between border guards.

Informational

Event

Authorities have reopened the Dogharoon-Islam Qala border crossing between northern Afghanistan and Iran as of April 25 after bilateral talks. The border post was closed April 23 following tensions between Iranian border guards and Taliban forces. Skirmishes broke out over Taliban officials' attempt to pave a road near the border crossing and the seizure of an Iranian military vehicle that entered Afghan territory. The closure left several vehicles and passengers stranded along the crossing.

Intermittent border closures may recur, especially if ongoing talks fail. Heightened security is likely to continue, with further clashes between Iranian and Taliban forces possible.

Advice

Confirm road status, deliveries, and transport reservations through at least April 25. Carry proper identification at all times and heed the instructions of local security personnel.
