Australia: Bus drivers planning 24-hour strike in Victoria, especially Melbourne, May 6

Bus drivers to strike for 24 hours in parts of Victoria, Australia, including Melbourne, May 6. Transport disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Bus drivers affiliated with the Transport Workers Union (TWU) plan to strike for 24 hours in Victoria May 6. TWU called the action amid salary and benefits negotiations with transport operators Dyson and Ventura, respectively. Unless averted, the labor action will impact bus services in Melbourne and some intercity services, including some V/Line routes, across Victoria.

Increased demand for alternative transport is likely. Crowded conditions are also possible on alternative bus routes and other mass transit services. Travelers could also rely on private vehicles, potentially increasing traffic congestion, especially in urban areas.

Unionized drivers may protest during the strike. Although TWU has not announced protest plans, workers may demonstrate near bus depots in their operational areas. Drivers could also rally at Parliament House in Melbourne. Police will likely monitor demonstrations that occur in urban areas. Localized traffic disruptions are possible near protest sites.

Advice

Confirm bus schedules in affected areas April 11. Seek alternative transport, if needed. Allow additional time to reach destinations due to possible increased traffic congestion and higher demand for alternative transport services.
