Australia: Teachers plan to strike in the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales May 27

Teachers to strike across the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales May 27. Protests planned; disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized Catholic school teachers and staff plan to strike in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and New South Wales (NSW) May 27 to demand better salaries and working conditions. Approximately 17,000 employees will participate in the labor action; unless averted, the strike will almost certainly close Catholic schools in both locations. Increased absenteeism is possible among employees who are parents of affected children during the walkout.

Teachers plan to protest in several locations in ACT and NSW during the strike. Organizers have announced the following rally locations:

  • Bathurst: Teachers to gather at Paddy's Hotel at 10:00 before marching to the Catholic Education Office on Gilmour Street.

  • Canberra: Teachers to meet at Thoroughbred Park at 10:00.

  • Dubbo: Protesters will gather at Victoria Park Rotunda from 10:30 and march to the Catholic Education Office on Brisbane Street.

  • Lennox Head: Demonstrators will gather at Club Lennox from 10:00.

  • Newcastle: Rally planned from 10:00 at Wickham Park; teachers to march to Catholic Schools Office on Hunter Street.

  • Port Macquarie: Teachers will gather at Westport Club from 09:00.

  • Sydney: Rally to take place at Sydney Town Hall from 10:00; march planned to Polding House on Liverpool Street.

  • Tamworth: Gathering slated for 10:00 at West Tamworth Leagues Club.

  • Wagga Wagga: Teachers will rally at Romano's Hotel on Fitzmaurice Street at 10:30 before marching to the Catholic Education Office on Tarcutta Street.

  • Wollongong: Teachers will meet at MacCabe Park at 10:00 before marching to the Catholic Education Office on Market Street.

Increased security is likely near protest sites. Police could temporarily block roads in cities where marches will occur. Localized transport disruptions are possible.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating near planned march routes. Plan for localized transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach nearby destinations. Consider hybrid work arrangements due to the potential for increased employee absenteeism.
