Disruptions are likely to continue in the coming hours around Penha, in northern Rio de Janeiro, May 24, following a police operation in the area. Police reported indicate that one civilian and 10 suspects were killed following an operation against a criminal organization that started at around 04:00 in the Vila Cruzeiro neighborhood of Penha. The civilian was killed at Rua Dionisio.

Authorities indicated the suspects opened fire on police agents when the operation started. Heightened security in the area is likely for the coming hours as the investigations continue. Police have taken weapons and grenades from the area of the operation. Nearby schools will remain closed May 24, and certain roads may be closed due to the large police presence.
