Lebanon: Doctors to strike May 26-27

Doctors and hospitals to strike in Lebanon May 26-27; associated protests outside Ministry of Health in Beirut possible.

Informational

Event

Syndicates of Doctors of Lebanon in Beirut and the North and the Syndicate of Private Hospital Owners in Lebanon have announced a two-day general strike at hospitals on May 26-27. It appears that the strike will largely impact Beirut and Tripoli; however, it is possible that the labor action will impact medical facilities nationwide. The labor action is in response to the country's Central Bank policies; organizers allege that they cannot obtain their fees in cash.

The work stoppage will affect nonemergency medical services for the duration of the strike. Striking doctors and nurses may also hold demonstrations outside hospitals. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are possible near any protests that may materialize.

Advice

Confirm all medical appointments at impacted hospitals, as well as at nearby healthcare facilities due to the potential for overflow disruptions. As a standard security precaution, keep away from any strike-related demonstrations that may materialize.
