Israel: US government issues security alert for multiple areas in Jerusalem as of late May

US Embassy issues security alert for several areas in Jerusalem, Israel, as of late May.

Warning

Event

The US Embassy in Jerusalem issued a security alert May 25 recommending that travelers in the city remain vigilant amid the near-daily clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians and following recent militant attacks in Israel. The embassy has prohibited US government employees and their family members from entering the Old City after dark and on Fridays. The measure, which prohibits government workers' use of Damascus, Herod's, and Lions' Gates, will remain in effect until May 30; however, Damascus Gate will continue to remain off-limits to government employees until further notice. Government employees are also prohibited from entering the Old City at any time May 29.

Context

The US advisory comes a few days before Jerusalem Day (Yom Yerushalayim), which will begin the evening of May 28 and continue through the evening of May 29. Events on the holiday typically include several major rallies, marches, and other activities, particularly within the Old City. Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians often increase on Jerusalem Day, which marks the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over the Old City in June 1967 amid the Six-Day War. The annual Jerusalem Day Flag March, a right-wing parade through the Old City's Muslim Quarter that ends at the Western Wall, has previously been blamed for increased tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. Militant groups have threatened rocket attacks, prompting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to put the country's air defense systems on high alert. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities will deploy 3,000 police officers to secure the march.

Advice

Maintain heightened vigilance if operating in Jerusalem. Minimize exposure to places of worship, security installations, markets, and other crowded locations. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations. Adhere to all instructions issued by local and governmental authorities. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
