Protests possible across Brazil through June 1 following death of man in police custody in Umbauba May 25; heightened security likely.

Informational

Event

Protests are possible across Brazil through at least June 1 after a mentally ill man died while in police custody in Umbauba, Sergipe State, May 25. Video of the incident appears to show officers forcing the man into the rear of a police vehicle and deploying tear gas inside it immediately before the man died. Immediately following the event, some residents of Umbauba staged an impromptu demonstration in which activists burned tires and disrupted the flow of traffic. Although no major activist groups immediately called for further demonstrations, high prevailing tensions over the case mean that any additional demonstrations that may materialize could attract up to several hundred participants.

Police will likely deploy to any related demonstrations. Protests and associated security measures could cause localized transport and business disruptions. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, particularly if demonstrators attempt to bypass security cordons or access government buildings.

Advice

Avoid possible protest sites due to the potential for clashes. If crowds begin forming nearby, immediately depart the area. Monitor local media for updates, as rallies could occur on short notice. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions in protest-affected areas; use alternative routes to circumvent demonstration sites. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
