Kenya: Authorities extend dusk-to-dawn curfew in Marsabit County through June 30 /update 1

Officials extend 18:00-06:00 curfew in Marsabit County, Kenya, through at least June 30 to prevent criminal activities.

Warning

Event

Authorities have extended a 18:00-06:00 curfew in Marsabit County through at least June 30. The measure was initially implemented in early May in response to increased criminal attacks fueled by inter-ethnic conflicts over land and other resources. Any movement and activities will need to be cleared by law enforcement agencies. The curfew measure runs together with a disarmament operation targeting illegal guns and ammunition in the region. As of June 2, security forces have discovered dozens of weapons and arrested an undisclosed number of suspects.

Authorities will maintain an increased security presence to ensure adherence to the curfew; associated localized transport and commercial disruptions are likely. Locals opposed to the measure may stage protests; police will likely move forcefully to disperse any such gatherings that materialize. Additional criminal attacks are possible in the region over the near term.
