Northern Mariana Islands: Power outages scheduled in Garapan area of Saipan June 8-9

Power outages to affect Garapan area of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, June 8-9. Business, transport disruptions possible.

Commonwealth Utilities Corporation (CUC) has announced power outages in the Garapan area of Saipan June 8-9 due to maintenance work. The outages will also impact surrounding areas, including China Town and Navy Hill. Electricity disruptions will take place at the following locations and times:

  • 09:00-13:00 June 8: China Town, Upper and Lower Navy Hill, and Garapan

  • 06:00-07:30 June 9: Garapan Beach Road

  • 06:00-11:00 June 9: Northern portion of Garapan

CUC reports that the electricity interruption will impact well water distribution in the affected area June 8. Although officials have not announced additional water disruptions, they cannot be ruled out during power outages.

Business operations may be disrupted in Garapan and nearby areas; companies without backup generators may suspend operations. Electricity disruptions could also cause essential facilities, such as ATMs and fueling stations, to stop functioning temporarily. Disruptions to mobile voice and data services are possible. Traffic disruptions are also possible due to malfunctioning traffic signals.

Advice

Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for localized traffic delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas. Exercise caution when driving in Garapan June 8-9. Park vehicles in secure locations. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices where necessary.
