India: Heightened security ongoing in parts of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory June 10 due to possible violence

Officials bolstering security in Jammu and Kashmir, India, as of June 10. Internet curbs, curfews, and strike reported in Kashmir Valley.

Warning

Event

Officials are imposing heightened security measures in parts of the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory as of June 10 due to possible communal violence amid blasphemy protests by Muslim groups. Authorities have suspended mobile internet services and declared a curfew in parts of Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts from late June 9 after videos of violent threats made during a blasphemy protest at a mosque in Jammu were circulated on social media. Mobile internet curbs are also active in parts of Srinagar from June 10, after local businesses and public transport services in the Shehr-e-Khaas area of Srinagar commenced a shutdown strike. Other protests may occur, especially following afternoon Islamic prayers. Gatherings may occur at government buildings, public squares, religious sites, and major intersections. Several dozen to a few hundred people may participate in protests. The highest participation is likely in the Kashmir Valley region.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially if police forcibly disperse gatherings. Demonstrators may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Arson, vandalism, and targeted attacks on religious sites as well as security and government personnel and/or facilities cannot be ruled out. Officials may impose additional limits on public movement and telecommunication services if significant violence breaks out.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near gatherings; exercise caution near popular protest sites. Plan for business disruptions. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
