Go-slow protests are causing significant disruptions on M4 and M5 highways near Bristol July 4. Increased security reported.

Warning

Event

A number of go-slow protests are currently causing significant transport disruptions in the Bristol area July 4. Slow-moving columns of vehicles are moving in both directions along the Prince of Wales Bridge (M4), as well as between the towns of Almondsbury and Tormarton along the M4 north of Bristol. A third column of vehicles is moving northwards between Clevedon and Almondsbury; it is expected to reverse course at Almondsbury and return to the town of Bridgwater. Finally, a column of slow-moving vehicles is also causing significant disruptions on the westbound lanes of the River Severn Bridge (M48).

Significant road travel disruptions are ongoing and will likely persist for some time after the protests have concluded in the coming hours. Knock-on disruptions have also been reported on the M48 and M32 highways. Additional police have been deployed to monitor and facilitate the action. A number of public bus routes have been diverted, canceled, or are experiencing significant delays. The protest is likely to remain peaceful, but isolated clashes cannot be ruled out.

Advice

If possible, avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys. Allow extra time for travel in the Bristol area and plan alternative routes if necessary.
