Warning

Event

Further protests and strikes are possible nationwide, particularly in Maputo, through the end of July in response to the rise in fuel prices in the country. Transport employees protested July 4 in the capital, leaving commuters without transport during the morning rush hour. US diplomatic authorities issued an alert on July 7 announcing the possibility of protests related to the rise in fuel prices in the country and neighboring South Africa. Protesters may congregate near transport hubs, along major road routes, and in public squares in urban centers.

Should they occur, authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters are police are possible. Demonstrations and related security force operations could result in ground travel disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions near protest sites. Check local media sources for up-to-date information on the status of public transport. Allow additional travel time near protests.
