Pakistan: Security tightened across Punjab through July 17 provincial by-elections /update 1
Authorities in Punjab Province, Pakistan, to deploy heightened security through July 17 provincial by-elections.
Event
Authorities in Punjab Province plan to maintain a heightened security posture through at least the end of the provincial by-elections slated to take place on July 17. About 52,000 security personnel will deploy across the 20 jurisdictions where the polls are being held; of these, 8,000 officers will be on duty in Lahore. Particularly high security presences are also likely in Multan and Bhakkar.
Tightened security measures could remain in place beyond election day if authorities anticipate civil unrest in reaction to the outcome. Opposition parties, especially the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party, could hold demonstrations in response to perceived irregularities. Possible protest sites include polling places, public areas, and prominent city squares; gatherings may also occur at political party offices.
Officials will likely monitor gatherings and may close nearby roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Confrontations and clashes between supporters of rival political camps are possible. Police will almost certainly move swiftly to disperse any crowds that become unruly. Officials may also implement temporary restrictions on public movement and/or telecommunications services in the event of significant or prolonged violence.
Advice
Plan accordingly for security-related travel and business disruptions in Punjab until at least the end of the by-elections. Carry proper identification documents at all times and heed the instructions of local authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement personnel. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. If clashes break out, immediately depart the area seek shelter in a safe nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations near polling places.
