Suriname: Additional protests likely in Paramaribo through July 22 over alleged government activity

Additional demonstrations over government policies and actions are likely in Paramaribo through at least July 22, following protests July 18. Activists clashed with security forces after they tried to force their way into the President's Office; hundreds of demonstrators also gathered outside the National Assembly (De Nationale Assemblee, DNA) and in Independence Square (Onafhankelijkheidsplein). Possible targets of protests in the coming days include government sites, particularly the President's Office, Cabinet Office, High Court of Justice, Presidential Palace, and the National Assembly, as well as public squares, including Independence Square.

Hundreds or thousands of people could participate in the protests. Heightened security is almost certain, especially near government buildings and popular protest venues. Localized transport disruptions are likely. Further skirmishes between demonstrators and security forces are possible.

Context

Protests began July 18, following allegations of government corruption, misconduct, and failure to respond adequately to cost of living increases. Crowds have chanted slogans demanding that President Santokhi either step down or introduce far-sweeping changes to government practices. Santokhi cancelled a state trip to Paraguay July 18 in response to growing unrest; demonstrators had called for rallies at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PMB) to block his exit.
