Drivers' strike planned in Konkan Division, Maharashtra State, India, from July 31. Disruptions likely; protests, clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Unionized autorickshaw and taxi drivers across Konkan Division of Maharashtra State plan to hold an indefinite strike from July 31. Organizers claim over 250, 000 participants will cease work over demands including fare hikes and gas price reductions, among others. Service disruptions will affect the Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Thane districts. Increased demand for alternative transport is probable in the affected region. Significant statewide transport disruptions may occur if the work stoppage is expanded.

Striking workers may hold protests during the action. Possible rally locations include Mahanagar Gas Limited facilities, government buildings, major roadways, and public squares such as Azad Maidan in Mumbai. The largest gatherings are likely in urban centers, mainly Mumbai. Protests may involve several dozen to a few hundred people.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along or block roadways with vehicles, causing localized transport disruptions. Activists may also attack non-participating private hire vehicles.

Advice

Confirm transport reservations until the strike ends, especially if operating in Mumbai. Seek alternative means of transport if necessary. Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
