Solomon Islands to mark the Battle of Guadalcanal anniversary in Honiara. Increased security, localized disruptions likely through Aug. 9.

Informational

Event

The Solomon Islands will mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal with several commemorative events in Honiara and surrounding areas Aug. 6-9. Dozens of high-level officials from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the US will arrive in the capital Aug. 6 and attend events Aug. 7-8. The Solomon Islands government will host an event at its memorial on Bloody Ridge, while the US and Japan will also host official gatherings at battle memorials in the city. Diplomatic meetings are also planned during the delegations' visits.

Increased security is highly like near Honiara International Airport (HIR) Aug. 6 and as officials depart the country Aug. 8-9. Tight security is likely near official celebrations, hotels hosting the delegations, and diplomatic missions. Police could erect roadblocks or checkpoints near these sites, causing localized traffic and business disruptions. Temporary transport disruptions could also occur as police facilitate motorcade movements to and from memorial events.

Advice

If operating in Honiara, consider avoiding venues unless attending events. Plan for localized transport disruptions; allow additional time to reach destinations, especially Aug. 7-8. Follow all instructions from security personnel.
