Israel, PT: Cross-border attacks continue morning of Aug. 7 /update 2
Cross-border attacks continue the morning of Aug. 7; sirens sounded in Jerusalem. IDF attacks in Gaza.
Event
Cross-border attacks between Gaza-based militants and the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have continued during the morning Aug. 7. Emergency sirens have been reported in Jerusalem and southern regions including, Ein HaShlosha and Kissufim. The IDF has also reported additional attacks against Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) positions in Gaza. The morning attacks follow violence overnight. Dozens of PIJ rockets were fired toward Israel. Israel's Iron Dome air defense system intercepted multiple projectiles.
The rocket attacks follow the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) killing of a senior PIJ leader in the Gaza Strip earlier on Aug. 5. The IDF will almost certainly continue retaliatory airstrikes on targets in Gaza in the coming hours. Heightened security measures are likely in Israel's south and center over the coming hours. Gaza-based militants may fire additional rockets at communities in southern and central Israel over the short term. Precautionary measures, such as evacuations, are possible in the affected area. Rocket fire could impact flight operations at Ben Gurion Airport (TLV).
Advice
Monitor local media and heed the instructions of security forces. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Reconfirm all transport services, including flights.
If operating in the Gaza Strip, avoid known Hamas security force locations, which are common targets for Israeli airstrikes, or recently targeted sites. Establish a thorough communication plan to ensure rapid accountability for all personnel operating in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip.
