A magnitude-5.6 earthquake occurred in the East New Britain Province at 15:37 Aug. 8. The epicenter was about 149 km (92 miles) south-southwest of Kokopo. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 35 km (22 miles), and light shaking probably occurred in New Britain Island and New Ireland Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
