India: Farmers plan protests in multiple cities Aug. 10-11

Farmers' association calls for protests in Indore and Patna, India, Aug. 10-11. Increased security likely; disruptions, clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a coalition of farmers' unions, plans to protest in Indore and Patna Aug. 10-11 respectively. Participants intend to denounce the central government's plan to introduce short-term contractual army jobs. Related protests broke out in June, when the government announced the proposed policy. The Aug. 10-11 protests are part of a series of protests called by the SKM in northern states. Likely protest locations include government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Larger gatherings will likely involve several dozen to hundreds of people. Organizers have announced additional protests in the coming days.

Authorities will likely monitor the protests and could try to disperse gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible; security forces may use tear gas and water cannon to break up crowds. Protesters could march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently.
