Malaysia: Student activists to stage protest outside Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur from 14:00 Aug. 20

Activists to protest outside Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 14:00 Aug. 20. Tight security likely; disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Student activists affiliated with the Turun Movement plan to rally outside of the Sogo shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur beginning 14:00 Aug. 20. The purpose of the action is to denounce the one-year anniversary of the central government’s rule and its alleged policy failures. While the number of activists likely to participate in the protest was not immediately clear, a previous Turun Movement demonstration held July 23 to denounce rising prices drew more than 100 protesters; security personnel blocked demonstrators in the vicinity of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman Road from marching further toward Independence Square (Dataran Merdeka).

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security near the protest as a precaution. Localized traffic and business disruptions are possible. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out, particularly if authorities seek to forcibly disperse crowds.

Advice

Avoid the protest site Aug. 20 due to possible clashes. If clashes erupt nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations if traveling near the affected area. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
