Activists plan to protest outside Palais de Justice in Beirut, Lebanon, Aug. 16. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Activists plan to protest outside the Palais de Justice in Beirut from 10:00 Aug. 16 to demand the release of hostage taker Bassam Sheikh Hussein. Hussein had threatened to shoot people and set himself on fire in a bank Aug. 11 if his demands to withdraw all his deposits were not met. Since 2018, many depositors in Lebanon have struggled to access their money due to withdrawal limits and prolonged bank shutdowns. Dozens to hundreds of individuals could attend the event.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the Palais de Justice the morning of Aug. 16. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through the affected area Aug. 16.
