Warning

Event

Emergency crews are working to contain a wildfire in La Vall d'Ebo Municipality in Alicante Province, Valencia Autonomous Community, as of early Aug. 15. The fire broke out late Aug. 13 due to a lightning strike and is approximately 3,500 hectares (8,650 acres) in size, with a perimeter of 30 km (19 miles). More than 250 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire. Hot, dry, and windy conditions and the inaccessibility of the fire due to the topography of its location are hampering firefighting efforts. Authorities have issued red (highest level on a three-tier scale) forest fire risk warnings across Valencia Autonomous Community, prohibiting the lighting of fires. Further wildfire growth is likely over the coming hours and days.

Authorities evacuated around 1,000 people mostly from Pego Municipality as well as Benirrama and Beniali districts in La Vall de Gallinera Municipality, Alcala de la Jovada Village in La Vall d'Alcala Valley, and portions of Castell de Castells Municipality. Authorities could expand the mandatory evacuation orders depending on evolving wildfire conditions.

The wildfire may cause some localized transport disruptions in the region. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could close routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
