Papua New Guinea: Authorities maintaining increased security in Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, as of Aug. 29

Increased security ongoing in Mendi, Papua New Guinea, as of Aug. 29 following election declaration. Disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Authorities are maintaining increased security in Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, as of Aug. 29, after the Electoral Commission (EC) declared incumbent William Powi as the winner of the governor’s race under "special circumstances." The declaration comes after some supporters stole ballots from the Mendi Police Station and burned them amid fighting between rival candidates Aug. 18. Local officials brokered a ceasefire Aug. 23, but reports indicate that vandalism and arson, including incidents targeting businesses, have occurred since the EC’s announcement.

Police were previously deployed to the town, and increased patrols are likely. Officials have established an 18:00-06:00 nightly curfew until further notice. Checkpoints are possible on main roads to and from Mendi, potentially causing transport delays. However, additional attacks remain possible; businesses in the town could remain closed due to the security environment or halt operations at the first sign of unrest.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in Mendi. Avoid concentrations of security personnel and people due to the potential for clashes. Consider limiting movements until the situation stabilizes; remain inside during curfew hours. Check with local contacts before embarking on travel to or within Mendi, as reporting on violence may be delayed. Follow all official instructions.
