Thailand: Activist group calls for protests in Bangkok Sept. 3-4
Activists call for protests in Bangkok, Thailand, Sept. 3-4. Increased security is likely; disruptions and clashes are possible.
Event
The Khana Lom Ruam Prachachon group plans to hold protests in multiple areas of Bangkok Sept. 3-4. Organizers plan protests at Pathumwan Skywalk from 17:00 Sept. 3 and Ratchaprasong Intersection from 17:00 Sept. 4. Participants intend to denounce acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, and Minister of Interior Anupong Paochinda. Activists claim Wongsuwan, Chan-o-cha, and Paochinda are attempting to monopolize political power and prevent another general election from occurring. Dozens to a few hundred people will likely participate in the protests.
Authorities will likely monitor the protests and may try to disperse the gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. While organizers have claimed that they do not intend to block traffic, localized transport disruptions on nearby roadways cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near the gatherings.
