Lesotho: Increased political tensions likely ahead of Oct. 7 general election

Increased political tensions likely in Lesotho ahead of Oct. 7 general election; rallies, protests, and associated disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Political tensions are likely to increase ahead of and during the Oct. 7 general election. Election officials will release results Oct. 8. Tensions may arise around the Sept. 9 nomination of party candidates to select party representatives for both constituency and proportional representation seats in the parliament. The selection is usually contested and may result in demonstrations. Gatherings will likely take place in the capital Maseru.

Heightened security measures are likely across the country ahead of the elections. Security is likely to be focused near political parties' headquarters, polling stations, and electoral facilities before, on, and immediately after Oct. 7. Demonstrations and clashes between supporters of rival political groupings are possible before, during, and after the vote; this is especially true if any party challenges the results of the election. Authorities may use force to disperse any protests that materialize. Localized road travel disruptions are likely near any incidents of civil unrest or violence.

Context

The main parties contesting the elections include the ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC) party, the Democratic Congress (DC) and the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) party.

Lawmakers will elect a prime minister to head the government. The PM comes from the party with the majority in the 120-seat parliament. Between 2012 and 2017, Lesotho held three elections that resulted in political instability.

Advice

Exercise caution during the election period and near political party offices, government buildings, and areas with a heavy security presence. Avoid any protests, campaign rallies, and large gatherings before, during, and after the polls, as a precaution.
