UK: Unionized railway workers plan nationwide strikes Oct. 1 and 5 /update 3

Unionized railway workers in the UK plan strikes Oct. 1, 5. Nationwide rail travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

One of the three major unions, the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF), representing railway workers in the UK, has rearranged strikes for Oct. 1 and 5, over demands for improved pay. The other two major unions (the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA)) are also likely to announce renewed industrial action. A previous series of strikes in September was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The walkouts will likely affect services on all 12 rail operating companies across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The strikes, should they go ahead, will cause significant disruptions to the UK's rail network, with ASLEF and RMT representing 96 percent of train drivers and 40,000 staff members in the three nations, respectively. Lingering disruptions will likely affect rail services after the strikes conclude as operators reposition rolling stock. Available rail services will likely experience crowding, while significant congestion is likely on alternative means of transport. Union members may organize demonstrations, which may cause localized disruption. Further strikes are possible over the coming months.

Advice

Confirm rail services and allow extra time for journeys Oct. 1, 5. Consider alternative transport and book reservations in advance due to increased demand. Follow local travel advice.
