Event

A magnitude-7.2 earthquake occurred in southeastern Taiwan at around 14:44 Sept. 18. The epicenter was about 85 km (53 miles) east of Yujing. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and moderate-to-strong shaking was probably felt throughout Taiwan. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is likely near the epicenter in Taitung County. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days. Authorities are warning that hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicenter.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Significant disruptions could occur during shutdowns. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
