Warning

Event

Rail service disruptions are occurring in Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal states as of Sept. 22 amid protest blockades by Chota Nagpur activists to demand recognition as an official Scheduled Tribe (ST). On Sept. 22, South Eastern Railways will cancel several routes along Jamshedpur, Hatia, and Dhanbad, Jharkhand; Howrah and Purulia districts, and Kharagpur, West Bengal; Barbil, Odisha; and Danapur town, Bihar State. On Sept. 21, authorities suspended or diverted at least 14 trains within the South Eastern Railways zone.

Additional demonstrations may occur at railway stations, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and roadways. Larger gatherings can draw thousands of participants, especially near railway stations.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor the demonstrations and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out. Activists may block and/or march along roadways, prompting localized traffic disruptions. Localized business disruptions may occur if rail freight shipments face lingering delays.

Advice

Confirm rail service reservations and cargo shipments in advance if scheduled to travel near or through the impacted areas. Avoid any protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Plan accordingly for localized traffic disruptions. Heed all official security and travel advisories.
