India: Popular Front of India holding shutdown strike in Kerala State Sept. 23; violence likely

Activists and supporters of the Popular Front of India (PFI) are enforcing a shutdown strike in Kerala State through 18:00 Sept. 23. PFI called the action after the government conducted several raids on its sites and arrested 22 leaders of the organization on allegations of terror activities the previous day. Business disruptions are possible, especially in the group’s stronghold areas. PFI has said it will not attack people traveling for work or emergency reasons.

PFI activists are protesting and blocking roads in some areas. State-owned Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is maintaining services. However, some disruptions may occur, as PFI supporters have reportedly attacked a few buses with petrol bombs. Transport disruptions are likely near any rallies or roadblocks, including on interstate routes.

Authorities have placed police on alert and deployed throughout the state. Officers have vowed to arrest any people engaged in violence. Regardless, vandalism and attacks on businesses cannot be ruled out. Clashes between PFI supporters and police are possible.
