Informational

Event

Demonstrators affiliated with the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Confederacion de Nacionalidades Indigenas del Ecuador, CONAIE) plan to hold a vigil outside the Latacunga Judicial Complex at the intersection of Avenida Amazonas and Calle General Maldonado starting at 08:00 Sept. 26. The action aims to protest the start of a trial against CONAIE President Leonidas Iza Salazar. Authorities arrested Iza Salazar for his role in the nationwide unrest organized by CONAIE in June. Although released quickly, he still faces charges related to the demonstrations. While CONAIE remains in talks with the government and has not called for major protests, hundreds people could participate in the gathering.

Police will probably deploy to monitor the event. Localized transport disruptions are likely. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

The Latacunga Judicial Complex is approximately 85 km (53 miles) south-southeast of Quito.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration due to possible clashes. Allow for additional time to reach destinations near the area.
