Mayotte: Unions call for islandwide general strike and protest in Mamoudzou Sept. 29

The CGT and other unions have called for a multi-sector islanwide strike Sept. 29 over several grievances, including working and pay conditions and to denounce cost of living increases. A related protest is scheduled from 08:00 at Place de la Republique in Mamoudzou. Another gathering is reportedly scheduled from 08:30 in front of the school inspectorate offices.

It is unclear how many participants the protests may draw, nor how many workers may adhere to the work stoppage. Unless averted, the strike could disrupt transport and other services. Heightened security and localized road disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protest sites. Clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out if protesters are overly disruptive or if police forcibly disperse protesters.

As a precaution, reconfirm business appointments and travel arrangements Sept. 29. Avoid all possible demonstrations and areas where security forces appear to be deploying. If crowds form, leave immediately.
