Informational

Event

Human rights activists associated with the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement in Mauritania (IRA-M) plan to stage nationwide demonstrations 12:00-14:00 Sept. 28. The purpose of the action is to condemn the alleged arbitrary arrests of five of the group's members. Organizers have as yet released no details concerning potential protest locations; however, the largest gathering will likely take place in Nouakchott.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy security personnel as a precaution and in order to monitor any demonstration activity. Localized traffic disruptions are possible. Clashes with police could occur if activists fail to heed orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
