UK: Climate activists to demonstrate in central London from Oct. 1

Climate activists to demonstrate in London, UK, from Oct. 1; increased security, localized business and transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Several climate activist groups led by Just Stop Oil plan to demonstrate in central London from Oct. 1 to demand the government take action to reduce the use of fossil fuels. On Oct. 1 and 2, activists will gather at 24 locations in central London, including Euston, Paddington, and Waterloo train stations, from 11:00 before marching and converging on Downing Street for a rally; organizers intend for activists to block roads and bridges throughout central London during the marches to Downing Street. From Oct. 3 onwards, activists will gather at Downing Street from 11:00 each day to carry out roadblocks and pickets in the Westminster area of the city. Organizers intend to continue the action until the government agrees to their demands.

Authorities will deploy additional security services to monitor the actions. The demonstrations themselves and related security measures, including likely road closures and movement restrictions, will prompt localized business and transport disruptions in the surrounding area. Public transport in demonstration areas could be canceled or diverted. The actions are likely to be peaceful as most climate activist groups advocate for non-violent civil disobedience. However, police could resort to forceful methods to disperse activists, particularly on Oct. 2 as part of policing the London Marathon, and isolated scuffles with disgruntled commuters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Do not attempt to pass through any roadblocks. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in affected areas.
