Israel will observe the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot nationwide, Oct. 9-16. The first and last days of Sukkot are public holidays in Israel. Businesses, schools, and government services will likely cease normal operations Oct. 9, 10, and 16; holiday events may occur slightly before and after these dates. During the intermediary days of Sukkot, many Israelis take time off, and businesses may have abbreviated hours.
Heavy security is likely as a precautionary measure during Sukkot across Israel, especially along the northern border, the 1967 border (Green Line), and at synagogues and other public venues. Traffic in and around Jerusalem will be restricted; detours are possible at short notice. Security will be particularly high around the Temple Mount/Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, which has been the scene of recent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians. Transport disruptions are likely nationwide.
