US: Protests are likely to continue in Los Angeles, California, through late October to demand the resignation of several local officials

Protests likely to continue in Los Angeles, Calif., US, through late October to demand the resignation of members of the city council.

Warning

Event

Activists associated with several organizations, including Black Lives Matter Los Angeles and LA CAN, will likely continue demonstrating in parts of Los Angeles, California, through late October in an effort to force the resignations of two members of the city council. The action is in response to a leaked recording of a private conversation between three council members and a union leader, in which the participants reportedly made racist remarks. One of the council members involved has resigned, while the other two have yet to do so despite making public apologies.

Protests are especially likely outside the Los Angeles City Hall, located along North Spring Street, as well as outside the offices and residences of the targeted members of the city council. A large police presence will likely remain in place around the City Hall until the demonstrations abate. Police have clashed with protesters in recent days; similar incidents could recur in the future, especially during city council meetings. Transport and business disruptions are also likely near any such gatherings that may occur.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Heed instructions from authorities. Allow additional time to reach destinations near City Hall and other potential demonstration sites.
