Protests denouncing the Oct. 1 Kanjuruhan Stadium stampede are possible in Malang Regency, East Java, through late October. Residents and supporters of the local football club, Arema FC, have held protests in recent days demanding an open and indiscriminate investigation into the incident, which killed at least 174 people. Most recently, hundreds of protesters held a gathering at Malang City Hall in Malang city Oct. 20. Additional protests may occur at government buildings, such as the city hall, as well as at public squares and city stadiums, such as Kanjuruhan and Gajayana stadiums. Dozens to hundreds of people may participate in gatherings.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently.
