Informational

Event

Lebanese authorities will likely implement heightened security measures around the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in Naqoura, South Governorate, ahead of the signing of a maritime border agreement between Lebanon and Israel at the site Oct. 27. Representatives from both countries, as well as officials from the US and UN, will reportedly participate in the ceremony at the facility at 15:00.

Localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the UNIFIL headquarters throughout the day. Demonstrations both for and against the maritime agreement are also possible and could occur in Naqoura and other cities in country.

Context

With diplomatic assistance from the US, Lebanon and Israel reached an agreement Oct. 11 to settle a long-running maritime border dispute between them. In particular, the deal delimits two Exclusive Economic Zones for each country to explore the Qana and Karish gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea. While the two countries have technically been at war for decades, the agreement eased both parties' security and economic concerns and found a consensus on the limited and specific issue of gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea.

Advice

Avoid the ceremony as well as all protests and large gatherings that may materialize as a precaution. Comply with all directives from local authorities. Plan for localized transport disruptions in Naqoura Oct. 27.
