Israel: Legislative elections to be held Nov. 1
Israel to hold legislative elections Nov. 1. Increased security; business and transport disruptions likely.
Event
Legislative elections are to take place in Israel Nov. 1 to elect members of the 25th Knesset. Thousands of security personnel will likely deploy to secure polling sites. Increased security is also likely near protests and potential rally locations, such as major government buildings and public squares, in cities across the country.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security to any such demonstrations to safeguard electoral proceedings. Increased security measures will likely prompt localized transport and business disruptions. Clashes between supporters of rival political camps or between demonstrators and security forces are possible; isolated attacks against political parties, government institutions, or security forces cannot be ruled out.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Oct. 30 that it will place a general closure on the West Bank and close all border crossings with the Gaza Strip. The measure, which came following two militant attacks on Oct. 29 near Hebron and on Oct. 30 near Jericho in the West Bank, will be in force from 00:01-23:59 Nov. 1.
Advice
Monitor local developments closely. Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. Allow extra time for travel near likely demonstration sites. Reconfirm the status of public transport during protest periods. Heed the instructions of local security personnel; leave the area immediately if violence breaks out nearby. Exercise caution near polling stations. Seek updated information from local, trusted sources on election rallies and associated disruptions. Use alternative routes to avoid election-related events; allow additional time to reach destinations. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
