Bangladesh: Ferry disruptions to occur in parts of Barisal Division through Nov. 5 amid planned strike
Ferry disruptions to occur in parts of Barisal Division, Bangladesh, through Nov. 5 amid planned work stoppage Nov. 4-5.
Event
Ferry disruptions will occur in parts of Barisal Division through Nov. 5 amid a planned strike by launch and speedboat owners Nov. 4-5. Strike participants are denouncing a recent increase in fuel prices. Organizers have already suspended the operation of speedboats along the Bhola-Barisal route. The work stoppage will notably coincide with the planned Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) anti-government rally in Barisal Division Nov. 5.
Strike participants may also hold demonstrations during the labor action period, some of which may be well attended. The largest of any such protests would likely be held around ferry terminals, government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares; ground transport disruptions are possible in areas subject to protest activity.
Authorities will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between police and activists are possible; counterdemonstrators may also assemble and clash with rival activists or police. Additionally, the strike may cause freight backlogs and consequent delivery delays through at least Nov. 5. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near alternative jetties until services normalize.
Advice
Confirm ferry reservations. Do not plan to travel to or route shipments via affected jetties without verifying onward transport. Allow additional time for shipments; use alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive freight. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize due to possible clashes. If violence erupts nearby, depart the area immediately. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
