Authorities are responding to the discovery of a WWII-era bomb in Orvieto near Orvieto Station the morning of Nov. 20. Emergency crews have imposed an approximately 0.8 km (0.5 mile)-evacuation radius around the device, and moved around 2,400 residents out of the affected area.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely. Officials have closed several sections of the A1 highway toward Orvieto as a precaution. Train services between Florence and Rome are also suspended until the disposal operation ends. Other public transport operating in the area may face delays or cancellations. Increased congestion is likely in the surrounding area as drivers seek alternative routes. Authorities did not provide an estimated timeframe for the operation.

Orvieto is approximately 50 km (31 miles) southwest of Perugia.
